Food allergies may have changed the rules, but trust me — no one is going hungry around here, even with dairy-free, soy-free, and egg-free meals.
This blog shares my journey navigating food allergies during pregnancy and now for my baby. Our kitchen rotates between dairy-free, soy-free, egg-free, and sometimes gluten-free meals. I’m a foodie at heart, and I feel most like myself when I’m back in the kitchen creating something delicious. Right now we’re living the dairy-free and soy-free life — though during pregnancy it was heavy on dairy-free and egg-free!
This journey has been hard. But I’ve done the research and I’m building a one-stop place to help navigate these food allergies in the real world. From cooking at home, plating it yourself (looking at you, shortcut meals 😉), eating out (shout-out to GoDairyFree.org), lunches, meal prep, and feeding that sweet tooth — you are not limited by these allergies.
The world is still your oyster, and I’m here to give you a safe place to explore it.
When these allergies hit me, I started searching everywhere online. But everything I found focused on swaps — replace this, substitute that. What I really wanted was a place where the food already fit the diet. I couldn’t even find a category on Pinterest that matched what I was looking for. Instead, I kept running into strange “allergy food” that didn’t feel like real meals.
At restaurants I even tried explaining it as “vegan… plus meat.” That didn’t go over well. But it was the simplest way I could think to communicate dairy-free and egg-free at the time. The only other thing that consistently worked was Kosher food.
Growing up, my mom’s famous line — which I’ve apparently inherited — was:
“I just want something different to eat…”
Cue the brainstorm.
From lamb chops to duck, from comfort foods like chicken and rice to clean, simple meals like salmon — we ate it all. That curiosity and love for food is something I carry into this kitchen today. I bring that same passion here.
Food allergies may change the rules, but they don’t have to shrink your table.
Mama Makes It Work is about finding food that already fits — meals that feel normal, exciting, comforting, and sometimes even a little fancy. Whether you’re navigating dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free, or other allergies, this space is here to help you cook with confidence again.
Because good food should still feel joyful.
And we’re going to make it work.
